A detailed report on the cases, as well as analysis of its impact on the industry, can be found on page 45 of this issue.<br /> <br /> Two window companies have been fined by the Environmental Protection Agency for violations of the Lead Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule and other lead rules. Charged with failing to contain renovation dust, contain waste, and train workers on lead-safe work practices during a window and siding replacement project, New Jersey-based Valiant Home Remodelers agreed to pay a fine of $1,500. Johnson Sash & Door, based in Omaha, Neb., agreed to pay a $5,558 penalty for failing to provide the owners or occupants of housing built prior to 1978 with an EPA-approved lead hazard information pamphlet, as well as failing to obtain certification.<br /> <br /> Teel Plastics Inc., based in Baraboo, Wis., is selling its pultrusion division to Razor Composites LLC, a new business unit of James Hardie Industries, the international manufacturer of fiber-cement siding. The acquired assets will be part of a new business development platform in non-fiber cement building materials. Teel's pultrusion business specializes in complex door thresholds and sills for windows, doors and skylights, offering a variety of in-house finishing capabilities as well.<br /> <br /> Masonite International Corp. has acquired Baillargeon Doors Inc., a manufacturer of wood flush doors for architectural applications headquartered in St. Ephrem, Quebec Canada. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed. Founded in 1985, Baillargeon employs approximately 120 people at a single facility. The company's 2011 revenues were approximately $20 million.<br /> <br /> ProVia Door Inc. is adding a new 108,000-square-foot facility adjacent to its headquarters in Sugarcreek, Ohio. The building, expected to be completed this fall, will house residential entry door manufacturing and distribution. The door and window manufacturer is also planning to add about 75 jobs over the next several years.<br /> <br /> Builders FirstSource Inc. has opened a new distribution facility in Jarrell, Texas. The Dallas-based company's new location primarily serves the greater Austin market. The facility includes a 40,000-square-foot warehouse with an additional 6,000 square feet of office space. Its product offerings include windows, doors, millwork and various other building related products.<br /> <br /> Having previously acquired the assets of Gorell Enterprises, Soft-Lite LLC reports it is moving production of Gorell's replacement window product line to its own operations in Streetsboro, Ohio. Soft-Lite has also formed Soft-Lite Gorell LLC, which will continue to operate a retail outlet in Indiana, Pa. Soft-Lite plans to honor previous warranties for ongoing customers as the transition of operations advances.<br /> <br /> Said to be one of the largest manufacturers of extruded plastic products in China, China Liansu Group Holdings Ltd. is establishing a joint venture in Canada with the Skyreach Group Inc. The new company will operate two divisions–one providing vinyl profiles to the window and door industry and another supplying standard and custom-finished vinyl patio doors and basement windows, as well as decking, railing and fencing materials Ontario-based Skyreach started nine years ago importing extrusion equipment into the North American market.<br /> <br /> A group of U.S. custom wood window producers is considering development of a common tilt/turn program that would enable them to meet testing and certification requirements for energy and structural performance more cost effectively. Organized by Rangate Inc., a U.S.-based importer of woodworking tooling, and supported by Functional Fenestration Inc., a supplier of tilt/turn and other European hardware systems, the group recently traveled together to Fensterbau in Nuremberg, Germany, visiting additional potential suppliers as well.<br /> <br /> Started in 2002 targeting builders, GuildQuality serves a network of about 700 construction industry companies, surveying their customers and providing feedback on their operations. The Atlanta-based company has diversified over the past five years, and now counts a growing number of remodelers, replacement contractors and window manufacturers among its clientele.
