From WindowandDoor.com

Simonton Windows has been working to add more than 250 workers at its plants in West Virginia, Illinois and California in recent months. The manufacturer of vinyl windows and patio doors is planning to add full-time production personnel in the areas of glass, glazing, vinyl and loading operations, it reports. "There are several positive factors at play here," reports Tony Atzbach, a plant manager in West Virginia. Among them, he notes, the company consolidated some of its operations into the West Virginia and Illinois facilities late in 2011, resulting in expanded workloads at these plants. "Also, Simonton launched the new Asure line of energy-efficiency replacement windows and patio doors within the past few weeks," he notes. "This product line's success has positively affected manufacturing operations at our facilities."

Expanding its footprint in the architectural door market once again, Masonite International Corp. has completed the acquisition of Algoma Hardwoods Inc. With approximately 350 employees, Algoma reports 2011 revenues exceeding $60 million. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed. Wisconsin-based Algoma was founded in 1892 and has been manufacturing and selling door products since 1913. Masonite's acquired Baillargeon Doors earlier this year and Marshfield DoorSystems last year.

To meet growing demand for its folding door systems, LaCantina Doors recently expanded by moving its corporate headquarters and manufacturing operations into a new 67,000-square-foot facility in Oceanside, Calif. Originating in Australia 18 years ago, LaCantina reports it was the first company to establish manufacturing operations dedicated to folding door systems in the United States. Its new facility provides expanded capacity for its line of wood, aluminum and hybrid doors, reports Matt Power, president. The move also enabled the company to engage in more efficient space planning, which will enable it to offer shorter lead times, better quality and a safer, healthier work environment, he states.

Gerkin Windows & Doors is breaking ground on a plot of land located across from its current plant location to build a new glass fabrication facility. The new facility will enable the manufacturer to increase glass production and allow for line expansion in the existing plant, officials state. New automated machinery will allow for increased production and the new facility will allow for increased storage capacity, it is also noted. Celebrating its 80 years in business this year, Gerkin manufactures vinyl and aluminum window and door products for residential and commercial applications.

Kentucky-based Millwork Products LLC is expanding its operations to North Carolina with the opening of Jenkins Millwork LLC. With a 48,000-square-foot facility in Wilkesboro, N.C., plans to hire more than 50 production, sales and office employees as the expansion proceeds. Most of those workers will come from a Jeld-Wen Inc. pre-hanging facility, which closed in March, it is reported. Millwork Products pre-hangs door and distributes doors, windows and other products, serving lumber yards in parts of Kentucky, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana and Tennessee. Jenkins serves customers in the Carolinas, Tennessee and Virginia.

Hansons Windows, a replacement window and home improvement dealer serving Michigan and Ohio, recently moved into expanded operations in Columbus, Ohio. The new facility provides employees and customers with a more spacious and efficient place from which to conduct business, says Brian Elias, owner and president of the Troy, Mich.-based company. "We are bullish on Columbus and this new location is proof of that."

Amesbury, the supplier of hardware, weatherseals, extrusions and other window and door components, has acquired Unique Balance International, located in Montreal, Canada. The company offers a range of balances to the window industry in Canada, the United States and Europe. "Unique has long been a key player in the window balance market and their Spiral, Lite-Lift and Super-Lift balances will be a great addition to our product offering and rounds out our balance product segment," says Wayne Steinhauer, VP of Amesbury Hardware Products.

Balance hardware producer Caldwell Manufacturing Co. North America LLC has acquired substantially all the assets of Advantage Manufacturing, including its Magnum-branded operable window hardware line. The purchase adds depth to Caldwell's offerings with Advantage heavy-duty hinges complementing Caldwell's existing line of sliding window hardware, says Eric Mertz, Caldwell president and CEO. By combining two product lines and distribution networks, the new entity is poised for geographic expansion with a diverse offering at precisely the right time to leverage the economic rebound, he adds.

On WindowandDoor.com

Complete up-to-date coverage of industry news is now provided exclusively on our website.
